Pisogne and Iseo
ART AND HISTORY
PISOGNE– Pisogne is the place where the mountains meet the lake. The characteristic village centre is composed of many narrow alleys and ancient palaces and it descends towards the lake, creating a beautiful lakeside promenade, ideal for romantic strolls.
The heart of the village is the elegant square Corna Pellegrini, surrounded by the typical colonnades and dominated by the majestic Torre del Vescovo, built in 1250. The upper side of the square leads towards the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The Church of Santa Maria della Neve (or the Romanino Church) is indeed the real artistic gem of Pisogne. It was built in the XV century and it contains one of the most suggestive examples of religious painting of the1500s: an extraordinary series of frescoes representing the Passion of Christ, created by the popular painter Girolamo Romani, also known as Romanino. Thanks to the beauty, brightness and intensity of the figures, this masterpiece is also called “Cappella Sistina dei Poveri”.
ISEO– Iseo is on the south- eastern side of the lake and, since it is the largest town in the area, the lake has been named after it. Its medieval town structure is clearly evident thanks to the layout of the buildings overlooking the lake and the narrow streets that populate the town centre.
The Iseo Lake area has recently gained great visibility thanks to "The Floating Piers", the magnificent land art work created by the popular artist Christo. This masterpiece consisted of an incredible system of floating piers that made it possible to walk above the lake, creating a boardwalk (upholstered in 100 thousand square metres of ochre fabric) that connected the village of Sulzano to Monte Isola and the small, but splendid, isle of San Paolo, for a couple of weeks between July and August 2016.
NOT TO BE MISSED – Lake tour by boat. In Summer, in order to enjoy the best view of the Iseo Lake, it is possible to go on the Lake Cruise and the Islands Tour. Thanks to the regular boat routes, Pisogne is always connected to the beautiful town of Lovere, an incredibly romantic village, with its square 13 Martiri surrounded by elegant 1800s buildings. This little town overlooks the lake and is surrounded by the mountains of the Camonica Valley, rich in hiking itineraries, perfect for sport enthusiasts.
The whole Iseo Lake offers many gorgeous town and villages among its wonderful landscapes. On the eastern shore, there is the little town of Sarnico, one more gem of the Sebino, well-known for its production of motorboats and yachts.
